Houston Texans Late August Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
8/19/2018

QB Deshaun Watson is looking good in his limited pre-season play. After Watson the talent in the QB room is too thin. Draft Watson if you can.

The Texans are holding on to their 31 million cap cash hoping that OL talent becomes available from other teams cap casualties. Hasn’t happened yet. I think G Zach Fulton will be switched to the starting OC position before the season starts. C Nick Martin to me is the weak link on this OL. LT Julie’n Davenport and RT Seantrel Henderson are the team’s best Ts; I think they can do the job. G Senio Kelemete, C-G Kyle Fuller and C-G Greg Mancz and third round draft pick OT Martinas Rankin seem to be the best of the rest. This position could use some veteran talent. This OL plays better when Watson is at QB.

Maybe there is a TE here for your fantasy team. Third round draft selection TE Jordon Akins is a big fast guy that’s fun to watch. Sure he scored two TDs in the first pre-season game but what I like is that he can outrun anyone covering him in the seam. He can get separation and isn’t afraid to catch the ball then run over you. He won’t be a starter because he’s strictly an O weapon but you need to be aware of him.

Prospect TE Jevoni Robinson is a fast, 6’8" 241-lb talent destined for the practice squad. Look for TE Stephen Anderson to be cut. He’ll lose his job to Adkins and / or TE Jordon Thomas, a 6-6, 265 project that needs to learn to block. He should make the team.

RB Lamar Miller is the starter but he’s starting to look like a JAG. RB D’onta Foreman’s ruptured Achilles tendon will force him to start the season on the PUP list. Consider drafting him late, he’ll be back for the play-offs. Can rookie FA RB Terry Swanson and / or FA RB Lavon Coleman surprise? Both are getting opportunities.

WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Will Fuller should be on your team with Watson at QB. The coaches clearly want rookie WR Keke Coutee in the slot but his hamstring is robbing him of that opportunity. WR Bruce Ellington is winning that job. Can Coutee get and stay healthy? Looks like the practice squad to me. The one to watch is rookie FA WR Vyncint Smith. He is winning a job on this squad.

S Tyrann Mathieu is being held out of games like most of the starters. DE Jadeveon Clowney is playing possum and J.J. Watt just watches from the sidelines. Can’t give you a good read on the D yet; maybe after the next game.
End.
