New York Giants Late August Scouting Report
Tony DeArmas
8/19/2018

Here is a training camp update and some preliminary views after the 2nd preseason game this past Friday night vs the Lions at Ford Field.

QB Eli Manning sat out the game which isn’t unusual protocol. QB Davis Webb bounced back from a poor performance last week vs the Browns to make a few big plays. He played into the 3rd quarter. Rookie QB Kyle Lauletta looked poised in the pocket and also showed nice mobility as he scored on a keeper. It will be interesting to see if he challenges Webb for the #2 spot behind Eli.

RB Saquon Barkley did not practice or play this week with a slight hamstring strain. The coaching staff is being justifiably cautious with him. He will cause opposing defenses fits with his diverse skill set. I can’t wait to see him in the passing game. RB Wayne Gallman looked impressive as a change of pace back. Veteran RB Jonathan Stewart looks old and slow to me. FA rookie RB Robert Martin is fighting hard for a roster spot.

WR Odell Beckham Jr continues to sit out preseason games but is practicing fully and looks 100%. I feel confident he will get his contract situation worked out. WR Sterling Shepard will not play out of the slot much this year and should be able to make bigger plays as a result. WR Cody Latimer is fighting for the #3 spot and could be a big asset in that role.

TE Evan Engram should be a very dangerous weapon this year, especially if the other offensive skill players stay healthy. He is a matchup nightmare. Targets might be at a premium but he will make the most of them.

The new look defense under DC James Bettcher is a work in progress. I didn’t realize what a big change a 3-4 defense is from a 4-3. It certainly will be an aggressive defense. I am curious to see how the linebackers shape up as they are the key to this defense. LB Olivier Vernon, NT Snacks Harrison and S Landon Collins are studs.

I hope they bring in a veteran FA kicker as I am not an Aldrick Rosas fan!

That’s it for now. More to come later this month including a fantasy draft perspective.

End.
