Seattle Seahawks Early August Scouting Report
Rick Watts
8/14/2018

This is QB Russell Wilson’s team. He may or may not be responsible for every touchdown this year. But certainly his back up will not be. Wilson should go in the top 5 in a fantasy draft.

Listen, this O Line has been bad for years. It is improving slightly every year and will again be better than last year. Not top 10, but maybe not bottom 10 either. And a run first approach will give Wilson more time when he really does plan to pass. If the backup plays, the season is over.

RB

Trust me. Do not pick up RB Rashaad Penny. Seattle will not start him based on his draft position. They will start RB Chris Carson until or unless Penny shows he is better. A healthy Carson could make it to the Pro Bowl, so unseating him will not be easy. Speaking of health, RB CJ Prosise is injured again already. Poor guy. He has mad skills, but cannot stay in the game. Do not draft him! Penny may be the third down back instead.

WR

Draft WR Doug Baldwin early. For years he has been the go-to guy and that will continue. WR Tyler Lockett is healthy and will get the second most targets. He is a great late round fantasy pickup. Traditionally there is a big drop off in targets after the top two and that will likely continue. Do not draft anyone else yet, but do keep an eye on WR Brandon Marshall. He could contribute.

TE

TE Will Dissy will have a better year than TE Jimmy Graham did last year. Ok, maybe not as many touchdowns. But in every other stat I expect he will exceed Graham who hardly put in the effort. Draft him late because nobody knows his name.

K

It looks like PK Sebastian Janikowski has enough in the tank to be an improvement over PK Blair Walsh. Does that say more about Janikowski or Walsh? I wouldn’t draft him.

D

The initial showing are generally good here. Obviously there is a massive drop off at safety and corner too. But LB Barkevious Mingo is a massive upgrade joining two Pro Bowlers (one who was in the running for Defensive Player of the Year). I cannot remember Seattle ever fielding three linebackers with this much talent. The D Line has been aging for years and now has a shot at showing off some youth. I think they will end up being a push. Drafting Seattle’s team D late is not a bad strategy. There is lots of talk about how bad they will be, but I do not see that in camp. And as I described in detail last week, this secondary does not have to face top flight quarterback talent this year. Oh and the new punter Michael Dickson looks like he may be special and could ensure the opposing team has long fields all day long.

End.
