Pittsburgh Steelers July Scouting Report
Rick Moses
7/30/2018

The Steelers have had a quiet start to camp. The biggest news was an early injury to starting OG Ramon Foster. Foster was carted off the field and there were real worries about a serious knee injury. Reports are better than expected. Foster did not suffer ligament damage and is only expected to miss four or five weeks with a hyper-extended knee. A veteran on a veteran line missing most of camp should not be a major issue.

QB: The big battle is between rookie QB Mason Rudolph and long time backup QB Landry Jones to be the caddy for QB Ben Roethlisberger. Should Rudolph win the job then Jones would likely not make the roster. The Steelers almost always keep three quarterbacks so second year man QB Josh Dobbs would also benefit from Rudolph being ready.

RB: Once again the Steelers failed to agree to a long term deal with RB LeVeon Bell. Despite some early rumblings at the signing deadline that Bell might sit for half the season the expectations are he will repeat his actions of last season and sign his tender before the first regular season game. RB James Conner looks fully healed from last season's MCL injury. He is the handcuff for Bell.

WR: Will WR Antonio Brown suffer the Madden jinx? He was named the cover man for Madden '19. In all seriousness AB remains the top fantasy receiver in all football. His combination of receptions, yardage and touchdowns is tough to beat especially in PPR leagues. Brown caused a bit of a stir arriving in camp with his family via helicopter. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster has yet to practice with an undisclosed injury. He is expected to be fine. WR Eli Rogers was resigned as depth. The hope is he will not need to be utilized in three receiver sets with rookie big play threat WR James Washington pushing Smith-Schuster inside to the slot.

TE: A foot injury has already sidelined TE Vince McDonald. The severity is not yet completely known. McDonald's string of injuries last season make any physical ailment he suffers a concern. If healthy he is a decent sleeper candidate. TE Jesse James lacks big play upside and isn't a very good blocker despite his size. Having his role limited to red zone security blanket would be best.

K: The emergence of PK Chris Boswell in the second half to finish fourth in the league in scoring was not a fluke. He is a top fantasy option on a dominant offense. Of course no kicker is worth more than a late round fantasy pick.

DEF/ST: Can free agent signee S Morgan Burnett, rookie S Terrell Edmunds and S Sean Davis provide a big play element in the middle of the defense? Can CB Cam Sutton or CB Artie Burns step up opposite CB Joe Haden? Will OLB TJ Watt continue to develop? Can OLB Bud Dupree finally fulfill his potential as a pass rusher? Can free agent signee ILB Jon Bostic help against the run with Edmunds or fellow rookie S Marcus Allen helping against the pass in sub-packages with LB Ryan Shazier on the sidelines? Outside of the defensive line consisting of DE Cam Heyward, DE Stephon Tuitt and NT Javon Hargrave and perhaps slot CB Mike Hilton the defense is filled with question-marks.

End.
