To see him out there and get through, with no issues, I thought it was a good sign. “He didn’t look overly rusty, although we all had cans of Rust-Oleum in our pockets.” LB Tamba Hali, LB Cameron Sheffield, CB Maurice Leggett, OG Darryl Harris and OT Ryan O’Callaghan spent Monday’s practice session in the conditioning area. The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs HC Todd Haley said Monday that CB Maurice Leggett, who was carted from the field after suffering a neck injury during Saturday night’s preseason loss at Tampa Bay, should play again “sooner rather than later.” “Everything is positive that I’ve heard,” Haley said. “All things point to the fact that this should not affect him career-wise.” The coach said there was no damage to Leggett’s spinal cord. Tue Aug 17, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs HC Todd Haley said that, despite a breakout 2009 season and a strong performance in Friday’s preseason opener, RB Jamaal Charles’ role is “still to be determined.” Veteran RB Thomas Jones remains listed as the No. 1 running back ahead of Charles, a third-year back who rushed for 1,120 yards last season. “Jamaal is a developing player,” Haley said Monday. “Jamaal is a player that, last year at times in that development, had good days, bad days and in-between days like a lot of other guys. That is part of the development, and that is part of becoming a dependable player on a daily basis.” Haley said Charles has had a strong camp, even though he was unable to work out or practice during much of the offseason because of shoulder surgery. Haley added that he likes the Chiefs’ stable of running backs, led by the younger Charles complementing Jones and vice versa. “They both understand what’s going on,” Haley said. “It’s a good situation.”

Wed Aug 11, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

That’s consistent with the way they’ve lined up during training camp practices. Jones unfailing is sent out with the first team before Charles. HC Todd Haley said that situation would probably continue for the foreseeable future. But he also added, ''I wouldn’t hold me to anything on the depth chart right now.'' Haley has indicated there will be enough work to keep both players happy. ''They both want to be the starter,'' he said. ''There’s no doubt about that. Somebody’s got to start. That’s just the way it is. We’ll do our due diligence. We’ll play the guy that gives us the best chance to win on that particular day, that particular series, that particular half, whatever it is. I will not be shy in making sure the guy that I think is running the best at a particular time is in there.''

-- Jarrad Page's Agent Out Chiefs as Being Vindictive --
Sat Aug 7, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

The Kansas City Star reports the agent for Chiefs S Jarrad Page sent an e-mail to a Kansas City radio station Friday, stating that Page had been mishandled, was injured because of HC Todd Haley’s negligence and that trade requests had been ignored by the team. Page spent most of last season on injured reserve because of a calf injury, and he has yet to sign the Chiefs’ restricted free-agent offer for the 2010 season. Page didn’t participate in Kansas City’s offseason program, including mandatory workouts. He hasn’t reported to training camp in St. Joseph, and the e-mail stated that Page no longer keeps a residence in the Kansas City area and has moved to his native California. “Beginning in the Pre-Season and continuing all year,” the e-mail read, “Coach Todd Haley mishandled Jarrad last season causing him to end up on IR. … There has been (trade) interest for Jarrad and the Chiefs are blocking legitimate trades. There’s been plenty of time to get a trade done and at this point, in our opinion, it’s clear that the Chiefs are being Vindictive.” The e-mail stated that Page requested a trade after the Chiefs’ third preseason game in 2009 and reiterated that request June 17, 2010. The e-mail, which was signed only by “Staff” at Front Page Sports Management, was sent to radio station KCSP-AM. Page remained on Kansas City’s roster during Friday’s two training-camp sessions.

After nearly one week at training camp, Moeaki is someone who has looked sharp. Still, HC Todd Haley said the tight ends and wide receivers are expected to improve. “Tony is just like the rest of this rookie group,” Haley said, “and I’m encouraged by each and every one of them and I’m hoping that each and every one of them can come in here and help us be a better football team.”

Albert had difficulty getting there, and the result was a season that was uneven at best. Albert allowed nine sacks, fifth most in the NFL. He said his weight, listed by the Chiefs at 316 pounds, wasn’t a problem this offseason. “I worked hard in the offseason, got stronger,” Albert said. “I didn’t fall off as bad as I did last offseason. I think it’s helping right now with my focus and my energy and the clarity of my mind. I can focus on what I need to focus on.”

-- Dwayne Bowe Praised --
Sun Aug 1, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs HC Todd Haley praised WR Dwayne Bowe on Saturday. After a sharp performance Friday, Bowe picked up where he left off during Saturday’s two sessions, making several tough catches and running terrific routes. He looked focused and fit. The only time Haley reprimanded the fourth-year wideout was when Bowe ran a crisp route to get by CB Brandon Carr and stopped after the catch to pose for fans. Haley yelled for Bowe to “hustle back” to the huddle. “It’s carrying over from OTAs and minicamp,” CB Brandon Flowers said of Bowe. “He came in in OTAs and minicamp and dropped his weight, got in well-conditioned shape. He’s stepping up to a whole other level. He’s definitely like a No. 1 receiver out there.” Bowe was known more this offseason for his off-field judgment than his performance or potential. He was quoted in a magazine as saying that Chiefs veterans were “importing” women on road trips during his rookie season in 2007. That was months after Bowe was suspended four games for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs. Haley said Bowe is trying to focus on football and leave his mistakes behind. “I’m encouraged with where Dwayne is right now,” Haley said. “I think he’s clearly ahead of where he was last year. He’s fighting to be considered one of the good receivers in the league. I think that’s his goal and his mind-set.”

-- Thomas Jones Ahead of Jamaal Charles for now --
Sun Aug 1, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs RB Thomas Jones took most of the first-team snaps at running back Saturday, relegating RB Jamaal Charles to the second unit. Jones might really be ahead of Charles at this stage, but it’s also possible that HC Todd Haley is using psychology to motivate Charles and remind him that last year’s performance wasn’t enough to deem him the starter. Jones, 31, is eight years older than Charles, but the veteran looked as strong and quick as ever during 11-on-11 drills Saturday. Charles’ offensive teammates came to his rescue Saturday morning after defenders lifted him and slammed him to the ground during a scrimmage. Players such as OT Branden Albert and QB Matt Cassel rushed to pull defenders off Charles, igniting the camp’s first brawl. Haley said later that he believed the team got it out of its system.

The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs FS Jon McGraw and SS Reshard Langford were the starters at safety on Friday, but those positions are far from being settled. First-round draft pick FS/SS Eric Berry’s imminent arrival will certainly shake up the lineup, and rookie S Kendrick Lewis, who showed a knack for being around the ball in offseason practice, got off to a good start in camp. Langford, meanwhile, dropped what should have been an easy interception.

-- Chiefs Injury Update --
Sat Jul 31, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs starting OLG Brian Waters was a consistent participant in offseason practices but didn’t make it onto the field for the first training camp practice. He instead rode a stationary bike at the edge of the practice field. Players conditioning during practice are either injured or failed the conditioning test that opens training camp. But HC Todd Haley said Waters passed the conditioning test. Asked whether Waters was injured, Haley said, “He had that other thing come up that we don’t talk about.” Haley routinely refuses to talk about injuries. OG Darryl Harris replaced Waters at left guard. Two other players conditioned with Waters on the sideline. OG/OT Ikechuku Ndukwe and DL Dion Gales are both reserves. Neither was injured during offseason practice, so each presumably failed the conditioning test. OC Charlie Weis (left knee) had a heavy brace on his left knee and moved around the practice field in a motorized wheelchair. “His knee went out at the 11th hour,” Haley said. “It was as bad a timing as you could have. He toughed it out and found a way to get through.” RB Thomas Jones worked with the first team at running back instead of RB Jamaal Charles (shoulder surgery), who practiced with the second team. S Jarrad Page has yet to sign his contract and is not in camp.

McCluster showed nice pop with his punch, solid leverage and an attitude that his head coach will certainly like if it translates to gamedays this fall.

-- Chiefs TE Update - Moeaki Expected to Get Playing Time --
Sun Jul 25, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

PSX reports Kansas City Chiefs TE Leonard Pope came in last season and stabilized a position that wasn't getting the job done consistently, especially with the blocking role. Pope is a big target, but very mechanical in his routes and doesn't really have the type of speed that can stretch the middle of the pass coverage. That's why rookie TE Tony Moeaki figures to get a healthy dose of playing time. Coming out of Iowa, he's known as a very good blocker, as well as being athletic enough to work down the field as a receiver. He displayed in the offseason practices the ability to find the open spots in the coverage and he catches the ball with his hands. TE Brad Cottam waits to be cleared by doctors are suffering a broken neck last December and undergoing surgery. He was held out of all practice sessions in the offseason.
