Los Angeles Chargers July Scouting Report
Brad Willis
7/29/2022

The Chargers and their fans have high expectations for the team, as it has seemed to improve on most fronts. But then, Chargers gotta Charger meaning that here in San Diego, we had such expectations for the team over the years which typically ended up with powder blue tears and failure. And we haven’t even begun discussing the Spanos Curse that is in place. Here’s a look at the current state of the team.

QB: It’s clear that QB Justin Herbert is possibly the best young quarterback in the league and should be one of the Top 5 quarterbacks chosen in most fantasy drafts. He is skilled, agile, makes good decisions and has plenty of good targets. Plus, his offensive line looks to have improved.

RB: Without a doubt, RB Austin Ekeler is the guy to target in your draft and no other Chargers running backs, as of this writing. Ekeler is a multidimensional back with good speed, surprising strength, excellent elusiveness. While he is a good runner, he is excellent as a receiver. Rookie RB Isaiah Spiller has impressed in training camp due to his receiving abilities, route running, and moves after the catch. I wouldn’t draft Spiller, but I would keep an eye on him.

WR: The Chargers have one of the better receiving duos in the NFL in WR Mike Williams and WR Keenan Allen. Allen is more consistent than Williams, but Williams is the big play guy. The Chargers have several quality receivers in reserve including WR Jaylen Guyton and WR Joshua Palmer, and while they’ll score from time-to-time, their value is limited if Williams and Allen remain healthy.

TE: Tight end appears to be another area of improvement for the team with the addition of TE Gerald Everett, who is a TE2. Big play, hybrid TE Donald Parham, Jr. returns and 2nd year man TE Tre’ McKitty has shown flashes of what he can do.

PK: Returning at kicker is PK Dustin Hopkins, who gave the team some much needed consistency in 2021. He should be an above average fantasy option for 2022.

DEF: On paper at least, the Chargers defense looks to be much improved. Their big signing was CB J.C. Jackson, who came over from the Patriots. LB Joey Bosa will now share pass rushing responsibilities with newly acquired LB Khalil Mack. SS Derwin James, Jr. and LCD Asante Samuel, Jr. are excellent. While there’s still not tremendous depth, still, the defense should be pretty good. Good luck on your 2022 fantasy draft!

End.
