Los Angeles Chargers Late August Scouting Report
Brad Willis
8/30/2021

The Chargers finished a meaningless preseason 1-2 and now move onto the regular season where they’ll meet the Washington Football Team on the road. While there are some very good players on this Chargers team, there is a notable lack of depth at most positions, except for wide receiver. Here’s a look at the current state of the team.

QB: As you are likely aware, Chargers QB Justin Herbert will likely be a top 10 quarterback this season. But if Herbert were to go down to injury, there’s really no one even close in terms of talent. There was a battle for the #2 spot between QB Chase Daniel and QB Easton Stick. In my view, Stick won the battle, but my vote doesn’t count and from a fantasy perspective it doesn’t really matter.

RB: The Chargers starter is RB Austin Ekeler who should be considered a weak RB1 or better RB2. No one else has impressed. RB Larry Rountree III played well enough to make the team and looks like he may be the 2nd best running back on the team right now, but the depth chart may not reflect that. But other than Ekeler, you don’t want any other Chargers on your team at running back currently.

WR: This is the one area where I feel that the Chargers have plenty of depth. The obvious choice is WR Keenan Allen, who will likely be a fantasy WR1 on most teams. Much attention has been paid to the inconsistent, oft-injured WR Mike Williams, but I’m not sold just yet. I think the talent is there, but injuries and plenty of competition are a concern. I’m not going to name all the other Chargers receivers, as there are a lot of them and as mentioned, really a lot of talent and depth here. But right now, Allen is the only truly obvious pick up. Watch and learn in terms of everyone else. Williams is worth a later round draft pick, but as mentioned, I’m not completely sold on him.

TE: There’s some depth here as well. Not sure who will get the looks. Will it be veteran TE Jared Cook? Or my favorite, hybrid speedster TE Donald Parham, Jr.? What about rookie TE Tre’ McKitty. You tell me. Until clarity emerges, I wouldn’t draft any of them.

PK: Nothing to see here. Nothing to draft here. It appears the starter will be the erratic and unimpressive PK Mike Badgley. Look elsewhere for production.

DEF: In my view, the Chargers defense will be average this year. I wouldn’t draft them, but they will have good weeks here and there. There are some standout players on the Bolts defense though including DE Joey Bosa, S Derwin James, CB Chris Harris Jr., and LB Drue Tranquill.

Good luck in your fantasy draft and good luck in the 2021 fantasy season!

End.
