Detroit Lions Early August Scouting Report
James Hintz
8/16/2021

In this report, we will summarize the news and notes that have been reported from Lions training camp, plus we will review the first preseason game, a 16-15 loss to the Bills.

QB: Most of the talk about QB Jared Goff has been positive, but that is to be expected in camp. If you want a more detailed description, I guess it sounds like he has been solid but unspectacular, with short throws and checkdowns looking like they could be a staple of what will be a very bland offensive attack. The game on Friday got off to a rough start with the Lions going 3 and out. Goff was late delivering a short hitch route on 1st down and it was almost picked off. Then he got sacked on 3rd down. Goff bounced back on the next possession leading an 18 play drive that ended in a field goal. He ended the night there 7 of 9 for 56 yards. There is no reason to move Goff out of the lowest tier of fantasy quarterbacks. Backup QB Tim Boyle was a little erratic as he was just 8 of 15 for 38 yards.

RB: It might be time to be concerned about RB D'Andre Swift as he has been out for a while now with a groin injury. They are saying that he is being held out as more of a precaution, and I hope that's true. The Lions have made some transactions involving running backs over the last week but they are mostly back end of the roster guys rather than looking to bring in a veteran. RB Jamaal Williams couldn't get much going on Friday as he managed just 15 yards on 9 carries, and this was behind the starting offensive line which features 1st round pick Penei Sewell. The line is supposed to be the strength of the roster right now, and the Lions should be able to do their share of mauling people on the ground, but that didn't happen against the Bills. Rookie RB Jermar Jefferson didn't do much either but looks to have a solid grip on the #3 job. RB Craig Reynolds is a long shot, but he made some headlines as he had 49 yards and a TD after just signing a contract just 24 hours earlier.

WR/TE: The Lions seem like they are dealing with more than the usual share of injuries in camp this year, and the receivers are no exception. I think we are seeing the pecking order develop as we anticipated for the most part. TE TJ Hockenson is developing good chemistry with Goff and should lead the team in receptions. Something I want to see from Hockenson is improvement with run after the catch as last year he had a weird habit of going to the ground after the catch instead of staying upright, but he didn't play on Friday. WR Tyrell Williams and rookie WR Amon-Ra St. Brown showed some flashes on Friday. Williams caught 2 passes (4 targets) for 30 yards and St. Brown added 2 for 12 plus another catch that was wiped out by a penalty. St. Brown should be a nice slot receiver who can move the chains on 3rd downs with his good route running. WR Breshad Perriman has been hurt and I haven't heard much about him at all. If you must draft a Lions receiver, take Williams late, and consider St. Brown in PPR leagues.

K/DST: The kicker situation is not looking good at all. PK Randy Bullock has been struggling, so the team dumped their camp leg and brought in PK Zane Gonzalez to give Bullock an experienced competitor for the job. This will probably go down to the wire. The defense of course has a long way to go and should be avoided in fantasy football. They seemed like they got pushed around a bit early in the game on Friday and didn't make any splash plays other than a sack from OLB Julian Okwara.

Up next is preseason game 2 on Saturday 8/21 at Pittsburgh, then game 3 on Friday 8/27 vs. Indianapolis. We'll see how the Lions adjust to the shorter preseason as they are a work in progress to be sure.

End.
