Chicago Bears Early August Scouting Report
Richard Fung
8/13/2021

News and notes as the Bears hold training camp at Halas Hall and prep for their preseason opener against the Dolphins at Soldier Field on Saturday afternoon (you're going to see the word "injury" a lot):

Quarterback

HC Matt Nagy says that QB Andy Dalton has full command of the offense and could play in a regular season game tomorrow if he had to. QB Justin Fields has had his ups and downs like any rookie, but his speed and arm talent are undeniable and have generated many exciting moments, including multiple bombs for TDs. He also had a fantastic red zone period against the Dolphins in Thursday's practice. Nagy said that Dalton and the starters will play one or two series against the Dolphins, then Fields will take over and play into the second half (and possibly the fourth quarter). QB Nick Foles is still here but very much would prefer not to be, if the passive-aggressive presser he gave earlier this month is any indication. He seemed to imply that Nagy's playcalling was the main reason why he struggled last season. There's obviously some truth in that, but he needs to shoulder some of the blame as well.

Runningback

RB David Montgomery has looked good and has been running angry, making him a good candidate to appear on Good Morning Football's "Angry Runs" segment at least once this season. He seems to be extra motivated going into his third year. When asked about the possibility of Montgomery getting 20 carries a game, Nagy said: "I think it's very doable." RB Tarik Cohen was placed on the PUP list on July 25th as he continues his rehab from a torn ACL. GM Ryan Pace said that Cohen has "been working his tail off. He's here every single day grinding." Veteran RB Damien Williams is second on the recently released depth chart and has been a nice veteran presence. Rookie RB Khalil Herbert is third on the depth chart and is also the starting kickoff returner at the moment.

Wide receiver

WR Allen Robinson missed Wednesday's practice and was limited Thursday with a hamstring injury. Nagy said that WR Darnell Mooney has been "on fire with his route-running" and has been "putting his own spin and stamp on more routes." He certainly looks primed for a breakout season. Speedy WR Marquise Goodwin is the starter in the slot at the moment. He was limited on Thursday with a foot injury. Another speedster, WR Damiere Byrd, is Mooney's backup and would look to be most likely to get on the field after the top three. He's also listed as the starting punt returner. WR Rodney Adams is behind Byrd and has flashed throughout camp according to the Chicago Tribune. Rookie WR Dazz Newsome was activated from the PUP list last week after recovering from a broken collarbone but has been limited in practice. The likes of WR Riley Ridley and WR Javon Wims need to have impressive preseasons to stick around. WR Anthony Miller was traded to the Texans in late July.

Tight end

TE Cole Kmet is faster and stronger and has looked very good in camp. He's first on the depth chart ahead of TE Jimmy Graham. The Bears signed veteran TE Jesse James in late July, and he's had some good moments.

Offensive line

Normally the O-line doesn't get its own category in this space, but it's notable right now because of all the injuries. Rookie T Teven Jenkins, projected to be the starter at left tackle going into camp, has not had a single practice due to back tightness. T Germain Ifedi, projected to start on the right, suffered a strained hip flexor during his conditioning test at the start of camp and is on the PUP list. Rookie T Larry Borom got a shot at left tackle but then suffered a concussion. T Elijah Wilkinson, just back from the reserve/COVID-19 list, is the current starter at left tackle. G James Daniels has missed a few practices with a quad issue. G Alex Bars has a knee injury. Part of the reason for this offense's late-season surge last year was the O-line having the same starters for the final six games, even though some of them were backups. If the injury problems continue, it could adversely affect the rest of the offense.

Defense/Special teams

New D-coordinator Sean Desai has brought high energy and an emphasis on takeaways, as evidenced by the "takeaway bucket" the players have been dunking balls into. DT Eddie Goldman's return has been a big relief, though he soon found himself on the reserve/COVID-19 list. LB Danny Trevathan has looked better than he did at this time last year, though he now has a knee injury. CB Kindle Vildor is the #2 corner at the moment behind CB Jaylon Johnson and ahead of veteran CB Desmond Trufant. Veteran LB Alec Ogletree was signed last week after multiple injuries to the linebacker corps (including a groin injury for LB Roquan Smith), and he responded by snagging six picks in his first four practices. However, he could still face an uphill battle to make the team because he hasn't played much special teams in his career. S Eddie Jackson returned to practice on Tuesday after suffering a hamstring injury while training last month. Fellow S Tashaun Gipson has a groin injury.

More to come later this month!

End.
