Cincinnati Bengals February Scouting Report
Mark Huber
2/16/2021

The Bengals have 28 free agents. Most are unrestricted. There are some big names, though not many standout type players.

QB: Brandon Allen. He knows the system and isn’t going anywhere to get a chance to start. He’ll likely come back to caddy for Joe Burrow

RB: Samaje Perine was more used and effective as he has been in his short career. Possible return at a good price, though with Joe Mixon returning to health Perine won’t start but could still be a much-used back to keep Mixon from being over-sued.

WR: AJ Green may have played his last game with the Bengals. I’m not certain. The Brown family likes good guys. AJ Green is a good guy. I would not be surprised if they offered a 1 yr deal at a pretty good price. Green may want multi-years but at his age and health over the past few seasons, I would be surprised if some team went more than 2 years for him. But some guys will bite on that 4 year $40m deal then get cut after one year. The Bengals could surive without him as Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins have assumed top dog status while Auden Tate remains a promising guy. Still Green returning wouldn’t be a shocker to me. John Ross, on the other hand, is all but gone. He hasn’t lived up to his high draft status and may just need a change of scenery to produce. Another guy likely to get a one year prove it deal somewhere else. Alex Erickson and Mike Thomas also free and may return. They are useful 4-5 WR types with Erickson showing return ability

TE: Cethan Carter, Michael Wilcox. Not much to see here. Drafting a tight end likely, possibly even Kyle Pitts at 5 if Penei Sewell is gone.

OL: Alex Redmond has been serviceable but with a new line coach coming in Redmond may move on.

DL: Carl Lawson, Mike Daniels, Christian Covington, Margus Hunt, Xavier Williams, Amani Bledsoe, Reginald McKenzie. Lawson obviously is the big name here. Given his age (25) and production, I’d think the Bengals will do what they can to re-sign him. The rest are names but with the possible exit of Geno Atkins some of the cheaper guys might remain. Atkins isn’t a free agent but he may be on the move just based on his usage and production last season.Daniels is still productive but health is a concern. He's played a full season once in five years and that was his rookie year.

LB: Josh Bynes, Jordan Evans. Bynes is a good veteran presence. Evans is a young improving guy. I’d think Evans will return, unless someone just blows him away with an offer. Bynes will return if he likes what he sees in Cincy. Otherwise he’d be more than useful with another team.

DB: This would be the major hit for the Bengals. Shawn Williams, Mackensie Alexander, William Jackson, Brandon Wilson, LeShaun Sims, Tony Brown, Jalen Davis are all at the end of their deals. I’d think Alexander and Williams are possible returnees. Jackson has had better years but will likely command good money. He could return unless he just wants to go somewhere else. Wilson is a special teams demon on KOR so he has value.

ST: Randy Bullock, Kevin Huber and Clark Harris would leaves big holes in the special teams. I’d think both Huber and Harris will return unless the Bengals just want to move on. Bullock is probably gone with Austin Seibert kicking well at the end of the year.

End.
