Seattle Seahawks Late August Scouting Report
Rick Watts
8/31/2019

Holey moley. I am so glad that I waited until the end to make this report. I had a feeling something was brewing and there may be even more to come before game one. DE Jadaveon Clowney is a Seahawk. And the Texans were schooled on this deal. Seattle gave up a third next year along with DE Barkevious Mingo, who was about to be cut, and DE Jacob Martin who is an upcoming talent who may or may not become a solid starter someday. And if Clowney walks at the end of the season, Seattle would get a compensatory third rounder back for him! So essentially nothing lost and a generational talent who is only 26 added to a defensive line that was struggling. Crazy. Now lets see if there is another late trade for someone to improve the secondary.

QB-

The back up for QB Russell Wilson will be QB Geno Smith. With Clowney in the fold, Wilson’s stock moves up because he will have more snaps with Clowney bringing pressure on the defensive line.

RB-

RB CJ Prosise is going to make the team again. He looks pretty healthy, but he always gets injured. Here is the problem with getting RB Chris Carson in a fantasy draft - Prosise is better than Carson. Hands down. But Prosise always gets hurt so he does not have the reps. And RB Rashaad Penny has all the talent in the world that somehow does not translate onto the field. And what happens if it does? Carson suddenly shares snaps with two other guys or does not get any snaps. As a fantasy owner I would be more comfortable taking Prosise late than Carson early. Proceed with caution.

WR-

The injury to WR David Moore threw a wrench in the works. He was a definite starter especially with WR DK Metcalf possibly missing week one. This is a good thing for WR Jaron Brown who should be performing better than he is. He will get some snaps. But week one starters could be WR Tyler Lockett, Brown and WR John Ursua. Ursua is a huge sleeper with tons of upside, but he is not Metcalf or Moore. In my mind Lockett’s value drops a bit with the Moore injury. Teams can focus on him until Metcalf proves himself and until one of the young guys steps it up.

TE-

Speaking of sleepers, TE Will Dissly is a name that could move up the charts in a hurry. He was injured early last year, but is the best pass catching tight end Seattle has had in years. I do not think fantasy owners need to draft him, but be ready to pick him up off of waivers if he starts performing. This is all the more true if Lockett does not have support at wide receiver.

PK-

PK Jason Myers will be fine, but I do not see him getting double digits very often in fantasy points. Draft accordingly.

D-

Okay, I had to say that LB Bobby Wagner would always be my IDP pick every week. Now what. DE Ziggy Ansah and Clowney are bookending DT Poona Ford and DT Al Woods! And LB Mychal Kendricks is now healthy joining Wagner and LB KJ Wright. So the LOB is gone and now we have what may be one of the best front sevens in football! These guys could bring Seattle into the top ten, but CB Shaquil Griffin, CB Tre Flowers (or another corner yet to be acquired by trade), S Bradley McDougald and S Tedric Thopson need to have two or three of them become household names in order for this defense to be what Seattle needs them to become.

This team D jumped into the top ten in the NFL for fantasy value. Most do not know that Ford is really good nor do they remember Woods is even here, so this D will probably be a steal in fantasy drafts!

Go Hawks!

End.
