Seattle Seahawks Early August Scouting Report
Rick Watts
8/19/2019

With two preseason games in the books we still know almost nothing of fantasy value that we did not already know. Most of the facts yet to work out are on defense, but that is just one fantasy ball of wax other than IDP which has always been about LB Bobby Wagner even when all the LOB was on the field.

QB-

In just a few snaps of the preseason QB Russell Wilson looks like top 5 fantasy quarterback material. There will be more plays handed to him this year though because the offensive line is finally good. They do not have much depth, but they are absolutely a good squad. Now we can see what Wilson can do with time in the pocket. QB Paxton Lynch and QB Geno Smith still will battle it out in game four of the preseason, but it really is not something that matters.

RB-

Ah, RB Rashaad Penny looked so good in the offseason. Here is the biggest issue with Penny, he needs an offensive line that he can depend on. He will not make the committed run, but instead hesitates and looks for the gap. RB Chris Carson hits the line trusting that the gap will either be there or he will force it into being. Now, Penny has huge upside because if he trusts himself, he will start finding the way past the line in ways Carson will never be capable of. So, a smart fantasy owner will take a late flyer on Penny knowing that if he puts it together then Carson will be on the bench. So how early do you take Carson? He is worth an early fantasy round pick if you get Penny too. Otherwise be careful.

WR-

I would vote for an early pick up of WR Tyler Lockett. News of WR DK Metcalf needing knee surgery should rocket Lockett up the fantasy draft board even though Coach Carroll says Metcalf will be back for the opener. We will see. That also will make Metcalf a steal until the season starts. It is a shame we don’t get an early peek at a Wilson to Metcalf connection, but I Wilson is Wilson and Metcalf can get open.

WR Jaron Brown is looking good in the preseason, but he has too. And they were running plays that are not typical against a preseason defense. Still, it is worth keeping a watch on him.

TE-

I do not think a single target went to any of the tight ends, but TE Will Dissly was on the field for the first time since his injury. In general he would be a gamble to any fantasy owner, but we will wait and see what game 3 shows.

PK-

PK Jason Myers has looked good in preseason action and will be a typical Seahawks kicker rarely getting double digit fantasy points. He will be fun to draft for Seahawk fans, otherwise just a decent starting kicker.

D-

I will keep saying that my IDP pick is LB Bobby Wagner each week probably until he retires. Which will not be soon. DE Ziggy Ansah looks like he will be healthy enough to start and we know nothing about DE LJ Collier yet. DT Poona Ford and DT Al Woods look solid on the interior. The linebackers are solid and the secondary is in shambles. So for now the team D should remain right in the middle of the NFL for fantasy value.

Go Hawks!

End.
