The
Quarterbacks:
Is
there really just ONE QB to own in 2007? Well, while Indianapolis
Colts QB Peyton Manning remains the popular
first choice, Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer
and New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees provide
more than reasonable alternatives to fantasy owners who choose
to wait a bit to draft a QB. In fact, scanning the top 10, we
find no reason NOT to wait until the middle rounds to draft a
QB like Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre . Bottom
Line: You can easily win a fantasy title without the top QB, just
make sure you grab one of the top 12 and you should be fine.
A
player we like in the top 10 is Carolina Panthers QB Jake
Delhomme . Yes, he struggled last year, but much of that
was due to WR Steve Smith's hamstring injury.
In addition, Jeff Davidson takes over as the new offensive
coordinator. If the Panthers can keep Smith healthy and draft
more talent at wideout, Delhomme could surprise in 2007, and rebound
to the type of production (29 TD passes) that got the Panthers
into the Super Bowl a few years back.
Rank
Quarterbacks
1 Peyton Manning, Ind
2 Carson Palmer, Cin
3 Drew Brees, NO
4 Marc Bulger, SL
5 Donovan McNabb, Phi (INJ)
6 Tom Brady, NE
7 Michael Vick, Atl
8 Matt Hasselbeck, Sea (INJ)
9 Jake Delhomme, Car
10 Brett Favre, GB
The
Running Backs:
Is
there any question who THE FANTASY STUD RB to own is in 2007?
Clearly, San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson
is THE PLAYER (not only RB) to draft. It's likely he'll be a unanimous
choice as the first overall pick in just about any kind of fantasy
league this summer. Good thing he passed on the Madden cover,
right? But what if you draft second and don't get him? Fear not,
all is not lost. The next four RBs aren't chopped liver. Some
may say we have Seattle Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander
too high at #4, but Alexander is just one year removed from a
28-TD season. Overall, we feel pretty good about the top 8 RBs
ranked, due to talent and team situation heading into 2007. With
RB Dominic Rhodes now in Oakland, RB
Joseph Addai could break the top 5 as the primary ball-carrier
for the Colts. If at all possible, you want to own at least TWO
of the top 14 RBs listed in our poll. These are the players who
will carry your team every week of the season, as long as they
are healthy.
Veteran
RBs who could lose their starting jobs by mid-season if not sooner
are Jacksonville Jaguars RB Fred Taylor , Atlanta
Falcons RB Warrick Dunn , and Carolina Panthers
RB DeShaun Foster . Dunn has a nicked shoulder
right now, and may not fit the mold of a bigger type back that
new HC Bobby Petrino prefers in his system. Could the Falcons
draft RB Michael Bush , whom played for Petrino
at Louisville?
Rank
Running Backs
1 LaDainian Tomlinson, SD
2 Steven Jackson, SL
3 Larry Johnson, KC
4 Shaun Alexander, Sea
5 Frank Gore, SF
6 Brian Westbrook, Phi
7 Joseph Addai, Ind
8 Rudi Johnson, Cin
9 Willie Parker, Pit
10 Laurence Maroney, NE (INJ)
The
Wide Receivers:
The
top fantasy-producing wideouts used to be a small group. Names
like Minnesota Vikings WR Randy Moss and Indianapolis
Colts WR Marvin Harrison come flooding back
to mind. But things have drastically changed. It seems with each
passing season, a new STUD WR emerges from the pack, someone not
easily recognized until the season begins. In 2005, it was Carolina
Panthers WR Steve Smith . Last year, New Orleans
Saints WR Marques Colston , a rookie no less,
grabbed the spotlight for most of the season until an ankle injury
struck. With a plethora of talent at this position, the advice
we gave here last spring remains the same. Bottom Line: If you
don't get a top 5 WR, take a breath and relax and WAIT to take
a wideout. Why? The production of the next 15-20 receivers is
tightly bunched together and there could be a Smith or a Colston
waiting to bound up the poll to the top position.
Seattle
Seahawks WR Darrell Jackson has always been
a favorite of ours, and he's still a top 10 talent, but there
are rumors flying that the Seahawks don't want to upgrade his
contract as promised a few years ago. With WR Deion Branch
on the team, they are said to be quietly shopping Jackson.
Of course, Jackson also has had health issues, although he's healthy
right now. Bottom Line: If he sticks with Seattle, he's a top
10 fantasy producer. If not, he could drop out of the top 20 if
he doesn’t land with the right team.
Rank
Wide Receivers
1 Reggie Wayne, Ind
2 Torry Holt, SL
3 Chad Johnson, Cin
4 Steve Smith, Car
5 Marvin Harrison, Ind
6 Terrell Owens, Dal
7 Donald Driver, GB
8 Larry Fitzgerald, Arz
9 Marques Colston, NO
10 Darrell Jackson, Sea
The
Tight Ends:
San
Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is clearly still
the man at the top of the fantasy TE position. After a bit of
a slow start with unproven QB Philip Rivers
in 2006, Gates still managed to score 9 times. Both players are
still young and learning, and with a relatively weak wideout corps,
Gates should be looked upon to produce more than the 71 passes
he caught last year. The next five TEs ranked are nearly interchangeable.
Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez slides back
to the pack with a big question mark at the team's QB position.
New York Giants TE Jeremy Shockey has the talent
to be the top TE, but injuries have hampered his effectiveness
throughout his career. Baltimore Ravens TE Todd Heap ,
Atlanta Falcons TE Alge Crumpler , and Washington
Redskins TE Chris Cooley all have the ability
for the big production games, albeit with a bit less consistency.
San
Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis will be leaned
up heavily this season with the loss of #1 WR Antonio
Bryant. QB Alex Smith is still learning, so look for
more targets for Davis in the short passing game, provided he
remains healthy.
Rank
Tight Ends
1 Antonio Gates, SD
2 Tony Gonzalez, KC
3 Jeremy Shockey, NYG
4 Todd Heap, Bal
5 Alge Crumpler, Atl (INJ)
6 Chris Cooley, Was
7 Dallas Clark, Ind
8 Vernon Davis, SF
9 Kellen Winslow, Cle (INJ)
10 Ben Watson, NE
