New York Jets March Scouting Report
David Vohs
3/29/2017

Well, the NFL draft 2017 version is quickly approaching and I’m contemplating what the NY Jets will do with their 7 picks in the draft. The Jets have the 6th overall pick, the 39th overall pick and then 2 picks in the third round. Rounding out the picks are 5th round, 6th round and 7th round. The Jets were 30th in points scored last year, 26th in yards gained, 27th in passing yards and 12th in rushing yards. The defense didn’t fare much better as they were 28th in scoring defense, 11th in yards given up, and 17th in passing yards allowed. So, conclusion? They need help on BOTH sides of the ball. Let’s look at the offensive side of the ball.

Free Agents Lost: WR Brandon Marshall to New York Giants, K Nick Folk to Tampa Bay, QB Geno Smith to New York Giants, and RB CJ Spiller to Kansas City.

Free Agents Gained: LT Kelvin Beachum, LT Benjamin Ijalana (resigned), QB Josh McCown, K Chandler Catanzaro, WR Quinton Patton and C Jonotthan Harrison.

QB: Wow, quite the change here. With QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and QB Geno Smith gone, that leaves QB Josh McCown, QB Bryce Petty, and QB Christian Hackenberg. McCown has 15 years of experience and Petty and Hackenberg combine for 5 years total. My thoughts is that the Jets would like to see QB Christian Hackenberg start with QB Josh McCown mentoring him. We will see. Many draft pundits think the Jets will take a QB with the #6 pick.

RB: With RB Matt Forte and RB Bilal Powell, you would think this would NOT be an area of concern, but with LSU RB Leonard Fournette sitting there at #6, Fournette would do a lot for jersey sales and getting Jets fans excited. That may not be a bad way to go! I have seen many mock drafts going for Ohio State CB Marshon Lattimore being drafted here and who could blame them. Still, a large fast RB would put them in good standing at that position for a long long time!

WR: WR Corey Davis from Western Michigan could be a pick here but I doubt it. WR Eric Decker has health questions, WR Quincy Enunwa and newly acquired WR Quinton Patton won’t make anyone fearful. The Jets have some work to do here. I think by the second round, they had better have someone who can scare defenses potentially.

TE: Austin Seferian-Jenkins is the guy here. I see him being the starter and the go to guy for the Jets in 2017.

K: PK Chandler Catanzaro has a strong leg that the Jets will fall in love with. Perhaps his second chance will propel him into greatness that he can achieve.

It will be interesting who the Jets pick at #6. If CB Marshon Lattimore is there, that might be a no brainer, but hey, I say go get the 4.5 40 running beast named RB Leonard Fournette!

We shall see in about a month!

End.
