Seattle's final preseason victory over the hated Raiders could not have been much more hollow. Another major injury to a wide receiver has WR Ben Obomanu out for the season. Seattle's biggest question just got bigger, who is going to catch the ball? Seattle's second biggest question will not be who runs with the ball, but rather who will fill the offensive line. RT Sean Locklear is not likely to start the season due to his knee injury and RT Ray Willis will start in his place. That leaves just three healthy reserve lineman, one being the often injured OL PorkChop Womack. Add to that C Chris Spencer only just getting back into the lineup when his back was so bad he could not tie his own shoes a few days ago. It is not good to have a shaky line at the beginning of the season. These guys need to perform as a group and that is just not likely. Shaky line and untried receivers makes for a running oriented offense. So the next question becomes who will run with the ball?
QB -
QB Matt Hasselbeck's back has become a question. But is a stiff back really a medical condition? Could this be more of ploy to make it seem even more like Seattle must run the ball. The final practice last week was closed to media. It is hard to know what we will see from Hasselbeck in game one, but that should not stop you from drafting him in your fantasy draft. He would not be my pick for a fantasy starter in week one. There are just too many questions.
RB -
RB T.J. Duckett proved his worth against Oakland with 71 yards and 2 TDs. Holmgren said at one point that he was starting to realize that the best thing to do with Duckett is just give him the ball. Duckett has size and talent, but has never been the back he was expected to be. One good game against reserves does not win a starting role, but it is enough to give pause to fantasy owners. RB Maurice Morris and RB Julius Jones are listed a costarters already. RB Justin Forsett has shown raw speed and excitement, and a couple of fumbles. Now the fantasy question is how much time with these four share? Will any of them breakout? Keep an eye on the stats from week 1 of the real season and see if any answers are coming. Until then, Morris and Jones are good fantasy draft picks, but their starting value is quite low until more questions are answered.
WR -
So who the heck is WR Courtney Taylor? All preseason he has been listed as the starter in WR Deion Branch's place which is where Holmgren says the majority of pass plays are designed for. Yet he has done virtually nothing in any game and not much more in practice. WR Jordan Kent has been ripping up the games and practices and looks to me like he should have a shot. WR Logan Payne is the other receiver who could challenge Taylor for time. Has Taylor shown Holmgren something no one knows about? Is he the biggest sleeper in the draft? Did someone just write his name with the wrong marker on the starters whiteboard and no one has taken time to wipe it off yet? Based on the past performance of WR Nate Burleson, I am hoping that Taylor is a hidden gem. In fantasy leagues that I am in, it is Kent coming off the board late leaving Taylor and Payne behind. But there is not a week one starter in this mix unless you are a real gambler with your fantasy points!
TE -
TE John Carlson should start and should have the opportunity to catch around 4 passes a game. TE Will Heller and TE Jub Putzier are in the wings in case the rookie cannot handle the gig.
K -
Surprisingly both PK Olindo Mare and PK Brandon Coutu remain on the team after the final cuts. It is likely that Holmgren is just indulging in this luxury for one week until two suspended defensive starters return. The kicking duel was very close all camp. The two main differences are Mare's higher salary and Mare's deeper kickoffs. Based on the issues seen on special teams, getting kickoffs into the endzone is extremely valuable for Seattle. Coutu has shown an accurate leg, but not quite as big of one. Week One will be the final duel for these two kickers.
D -
DE Lawrence Jackson has made it from first round draft pick to week one starter. He has shown that he has the skills to be a good end rusher and he has been practicing against OT Walter Jones for much of the last few months. He makes an interesting IDP fantasy start. DT Rocky Bernard and S Jordan Babineaux were issued single game suspensions and will miss week one. Do not look to start Rocky! LB Lofa Tatupu's injury is painful, but will not keep him from playing. DT Red Bryant recovered from injury in time to make it into the defensive line rotation and should see quite a bit of action. Overall this team defense could be very good, but without their starting MLB in game one their fantasy value should drop dramatically.
