The San Diego Chargers wrapped up their preseason with a meaningless record of 3-1. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, the Chargers starters saw very little action during the preseason. Therefore, this is going to be a relatively brief report, given the fact that barring injury, benchwarmers don’t really mean a lot in fantasy terms. This is especially so due to the fact that the Chargers’ starters are pretty much set. So with those disclaimers in mind, here’s your preseason wrap by position:
QB: In the preseason, QB Philip Rivers went 16 of 27 for 197 yards with no TDs and no INTs. #2 QB Billy Volek was 13 of 17 for 125 yards, 1 TD and no INTs. Third string QB Charlie Whitehurst finished the preseason at 29 of 62 for 284 yards with 1 TD and 0 INTs. The good news is that no one threw a pick. The bad news is that we only saw 2 passing TDs in 4 games. Presumably, these numbers will pick up a bit once the regular season begins.
RB: San Diego RB LaDainian Tomlinson did not play in the preseason. Presumed #2 RB Darren Sproles carried 20 times for 112 yards, 2 TDs and a healthy 5.6 YPC average. Probable #3 RB Jacob Hester showed good versatility and strong short-yardage ability carrying 44 times for 173 yards, 3 TDs and a 3.93 YPC average.
WR: None of the San Diego wideouts worth talking about scored in the preseason. Reserve WR Malcom Floyd led the way with 12 catches for 137 yards and no TDs. WR Vincent Jackson looked good in very limited duty with 3 receptions for 84 yards and 0 TDs. #1 WR Chris Chambers had 4 catches for 46 yards and no scores, while Buster Davis caught 2 passes for 40 yards and zero TDs.
TE: Starting TE Antonio Gates did not play in the preseason and continues to be bothered by a big toe injury. No other San Diego tight end did anything worth discussing. The Chargers have placed 2nd year TE Scott Chandler on injured reserve for a toe injury.
PK: Chargers PK Nate Kaeding missed but 1 FG all preseason and appeared to have improved range. Overall, it was a good showing for Kaeding.
DEF: The San Diego defense was up and down all preseason. While they continue to be a top-tier fantasy D, injuries and an iffy preseason make this defense good, but perhaps not quite as good as many currently believe. We’ll get a better read on things once the regular season begins.
That’s my preseason wrap. Look for a Chargers vs. Panthers preview soon. Until my next report, GO CHARGERS!!!
