It is now the peak of fantasy draft season as the exhibition games (as they used to call these pre-season contests) are over and final cuts are under way. Here are the 'Skins to scoop up, and here are the ones to avoid.
QB Jason Campbell- Unless you are are desperate for a #3 QB, stay away from him. He has a poor delivery, coughs the ball up when hit, looks to long at his receivers and is hesitant to throw the ball. Other than that, he is a real gem. A late round pick at best.
RB Clinton Portis- His value has dropped a bit due to the poor performance of the offensive line over the past couple of weeks. Still, if he is healthy he will carry the ball around 300 times for 1250 yards and 8 TDs. If head coach Jim Zorn knows how to use him, then he will catch about 60 balls for 750 yards and 3 TDs. A projected 2,000 yards of offense is not bad. Think of Portis as a bigger and more durable version of RB Brian Westbrook. He is a first or second rounder, if he lasts that long.
RB Ladell Betts- Draft him late if you pick up Portis. Good insurance in the last round or two.
WR Santana Moss- There might still be some gas in the tank for the Miami alum. Zorn's offense is similar to the one the 'Skins ran during Moss' break out season of 2005. Moss is also the unquestioned #1 receiver in Washington thanks to the poor play and injuries incurred by the rookie 2nd rounders. Moss might make a decent #2 receiver or quality third wide out. Will be gone by the tenth round.
TE Chris Cooley- Can Campbell find him on the field enough to make Cooley a top ten fantasy TE? Expect similar numbers to last year, 60 receptions for 800 yards a 6 TDs. A good pick once the tope 4 guys are off the board.
On defense with S LaRon Landry gimpy and DE Jason Taylor hobbled, the two premier fantasy players are looking like free agent pick ups. LB London Fletcher could serve as a #2 linebacker on your team if you have that luxury. LB Marcus Washington is a wait and see player who will be available later in the season if you want him. DE Andre Carter will be double teamed until Taylor takes the field, but you could take a flyer on him with the hope that he will get 10 sacks again.
Thats it for now. I'll talk to you in a few days.
