Preseason Packer Notes Week #2-3

Now that the Bengal game (a success) and the 49er game (a horror) are complete, and as camp continues…what do we know about the organization and the team?

  1. The O-line is not gelling and is one injury away from unmitigated disaster.
  2. Rodgers is competent and in fact decent when protected, but dances more than Jason Taylor on DWTS, when pressured.
  3. Ryan Grant’s holdout may be the cause of his hammy injury. Yay.
  4. The defense looks good, but needs to get over injuries.
  5. The battle for #3 & #4 CB is a tight one.
  6. Ted Thompson and McCarthy are hoping that the team that played in Candlestick Park isn’t the one that will be playing this Friday, next Week or on opening weekend. They have time to figure it out…but not much.
  7. Our #2 QB and TE are not on the roster yet.
  8. Jordy Nelson is making a decent push to be on the field more than expected.

While I would not draft Jordy Nelson in any fantasy draft, I would keep an eye on him. While Driver (who is seemingly having some difficulty adjusting to A-Rod) and Jennings are the only 2 packers worth drafting outright, Nelson could become #3 and merit a look if he does. He is catching EVERYTHING in camp and is performing solidly in pre-season.

Rodgers is a confident strong-armed QB, but if pressured, hangs onto the ball too long. He needs more snaps and more protection to get over this. So far, I am not concerned, and he remains #11 on my draft depth chart.

Grant has slipped a couple of spots though. Beware the hammy. An injury like this can linger and is anathema to a RB’s stats. Watch carefully, constant reader!

Injuries at D-Line (insert Justin Harrell joke here) are taking their toll. Johnny Jolly and Cole are good, and Kampman & Jenkins are doing well too…but not much else is happening development wise. One injury and we’ll be in deep (apologies to Jim Mora, Sr.) poo.

AT CB, Harris and Woodson are both getting through preseason "injuries" that veterans often "develop" to avoid the preseason, but I don’t expect either to miss regular season time. It looks like Patrick Lee and Will Blackmon are the likely recipients of the #3 & #4 CBs. We’ll see though.

At TE, Jermichael Finley will develop into a decent prospect, but as of now, he isn’t much. TE Humphries would drop a football with glue-covered handles and should be cut YESTERDAY. The team will look for a veteran once cuts are made.

More later! Good luck!
