Quarterback
All the talk regarding QB Brett Favre and the Vikings ended up exactly as figured, which was just talk. It does not appear that the Vikings ever needed him anyways.
QB Tarvaris Jackson started out the preseason in a very crisp fashion. Jackson, who was 8-11 passing for 118 yards and one touchdown, led the Vikings to two touchdowns in only three possessions. Worries about Jackson holding back the Vikings vaunted rushing game seem to be unfounded.
Backup QBs Gus Frerotte and John Booty did not show much. If Jackson goes down again, the Vikings offense would probably be doomed.
Running Back
RB Adrian Peterson started the game, yet did not register a single carry.
RB Chester Taylor, in limited playing time, managed to score on a one yard touchdown run early in the 2nd quarter. Seeing players score one-yard TDs in the preseason when a majority of the team starters are still in the game can sometimes provide a clue to their future goal-line status. As I’ve said before, Taylor’s risk/reward ratio is substantially higher than any other backup running back in the NFL, since he has already proven that he can perform well enough to be worth a roster spot even as the Vikings second option. If he can add "goal-line vulture" to his resume, he will be in an even stronger position.
Wide Receivers
In the first pre-season game, newly-acquired WR Bernard Berrian caught two balls from QB Tavaris Jackson for 43 yards in only three possessions. This, combined with the Viking’s willingness to pass the ball, could be an indication of a bright future. Berrian should start getting bumped up the lists a little.
As is the case with many preseason games, many wide receivers shared playing time and not much else should be concluded from it.
Tight End
Only a desperate owner would look to the Vikings for a fantasy tight end. TE Jim Kleinsasser started 10 games last year and caught four passes for 43 yards. TE Visanthe Shiancoe grabbed passes for 323 yards and 1 TD, so he was at least a minor component in the passing game. In the first preseason game, they each had one catch. Typical results. Stay away!
Kicker
A mysterious K Steven Hauschka did all of the kicking during the Vikings first preseason game. K Ryan Longwell is still listed as the kicker on the Vikings depth chart, so Hauschka is probably just helping save Longwell’s leg.
Defense/ST
The Vikings D/ST added DE Jared Allen and his 15.5 sacks to their defense; however, they did not register one sack in the first preseason game. In this game, the Vikings allowed Seattle’s passing game to riddle them for a highly-efficient 24-31 for 257 yards. The Vikings gave up 4,230 yards passing last season, worst in the NFL. I don’t think their defense will show much improvement. It takes more than one good pass rusher to improve a horrible pass defense. I think the Vikings D/ST appears to be the most over-rated fantasy unit in the NFL this year.
