As I was standing on a small hill overlooking a portion of the Washington Redskins morning 7 on 7 scrimmage, I noticed that #11 for the 'Skins pulled up lame. No big deal, usually scrubs wear that number in training camp. Not this time. It was rookie WR Devin Thomas writhing on the ground in apparent agony. He popped his hamstring lunging after a QB Jason Campbell over throw, and he was subsequently carted off the field. He'll be back in 10-14 days.
WR Malcolm Kelly tweaked his hammy today and will take it easy the next few days. Head coach Jim Zorn attributed the injuries to his rookie wide outs as things that don't happen to veterans. Veteran WR Anthony Mix hobbled off with a pulled hamstring, too.
Of course the most important thing that happened at Redskins Park this week was the blown up knee of DE Phillip Daniels. This was unfortunate for Daniels, who is a marginal NFL defensive end at this point of his career. It was some what alarming that he was considered the starter at left end going into camp, and presumably the season. The Redskins did not address their problematic pass rush during the off season, so Daniels was going to some how shoulder the load. It must have been to heavy a burden as he tore up his knee under the strain. Unluckily for him and luckily for the defense he was immediately ruled out for the year. Enter DE Jason Taylor. The Redskins may have their best combo of pass rushing DEs since Dexter Manley and Charles Mann harassed QBs almost twenty years ago. Now all we need is to have Campbell go down with and injury and have the 'Skins trade for QB Brett Favre.
This is what the Redskins starters look like now. On offense we have...
QB Jason Campbell
RB Clinton Portis
FB Mike Sellers
TE Chris Cooley
WR Santana Moss
WR Antwaan Randle-El
LT Chris Samuels
RT Jon Jansen
LG Pete Kendall
RG Randy Thomas
C Casey Rabach
PK Sean Suisham
On defense
DE Jason Taylor
DE Andre Carter
DT Cornelius Griffin
DT Anthony Montgomery
MLB London Fletcher
OLB Marcus Washington
OLB ?????
CB Shawn Springs
CB Fred Smoot
SS LaRon Landry
FS Vernon Fox
P Durant Brooks
LS Ethan Albright
The Redskins are thin at safety, linebacker, corner, and defensive end. I expect some guys who are cut late in August to be added for depth purposes. The 'Skins are good at all positions on offense.
Next month, I'll talk about position battles, the fantasy relevance of certain players, and some predictions about the upcoming season. See you then.
P.S. Dan Snyder wants you to place your order for #55 Jason Taylor jerseys right away!
