Philadelphia Eagles

Contract crises are nothing new to the Eagles, having gone through many variations over the years - including tagged players, draft picks, and players with contracts they want re-done. The toughest contract situations are those where the player is under contract, but wants a new one - or - using the franchise tag. Variations on how they've fared have been mixed...

The last two franchise tags have actually worked in the Eagles' favor. Both players ended up just being released and signed very lucrative contracts with other teams, only to crash and burn. Jeremiah Trotter was tagged a few years back, and it ended in a very bitter divorce ending with the Redskins signing Trotter to an outrageous deal. Trotter has never been the same since (actually a degenerative situation with his knee), was cut by the Redskins, re-signed with the Eagles for squat, and is now pretty much out of football. Corey Simon made a messy exit as well, ended up signing a sweet deal with the Colts - and has not been heard from since.

The renegotiations have been the tough ones. We all know in gory detail how the TO exit went down. This one ended up helping a division rival, and we're left waiting for the next meltdown. While TO was staging his holdout, RB Brian Westbrook was quietly extended. Even though that was only a couple years back, it is clear that Westy is underpaid - but that is part of the risk each side takes. Westy has made it known that he is not happy with his contract, but he is a team-first person. I really don't expect things to get messy with him. Within the last six months, Westy has fired an agent - signed with another (Fletcher Smith - same agent as fellow Eagle QB Donovan McNabb) hoping to spur contract talks - and has since fired him (rumor has it he's looking to TO's old buddy, Drew Rosenhaus). Maybe it will get ugly.

The other prominent name out there is CB Lito Sheppard. He too has fired his agent and has signed with Rosenhaus. Lito had been a team first player as well, and for the most part has not been a distraction. Signing with Rosenhaus instantly makes this a distraction. Things may get really ugly in Eagle land soon.

The rest of the signings are related to the two remaining draft picks, WR DeSean Jackson and DT Trevor Laws. Word is that there are no big issues standing in the way of these contracts being finalized - so hopefully they will be done before camp opens on Monday.

On the injury front, QB Donovan McNabb's shoulder was the talk of the spring camps - but all seems to be fine now. There are no other skill position injuries to report, and any of the other injuries are minor (worst of which was DE Jerome McDougle's rehab from a ruptured triceps).

More news coming up as the Eagles open camp in just a few days. Bring it on!
