Hi there Colts fans! With many fantasy drafts underway and a few more just around the corner, here is a look at the happenings in Indy surrounding one of the NFL's most fantasy friendly teams.
As with my last several reports, I begin with the status of future Hall of Fame WR Marvin Harrison. He has seen a steady drop down draft sheets over the summer, but I think the most recent news will begin his slow ascent back into the realm of a low-end fantasy #1 receiver. (Remember that you heard it here all spring and summer when all the naysayers were pooh-poohing his chances of a solid 2008!) Tony Dungy today was interviewed on ESPN and was quoted as saying that Harrison ran pain free at the team's last offseason workout today. He is confident that Harrison will be full speed at the outset of the 2008 season. Dungy also added that the Philly police have given him a definitive statement that Harrison is not going to be a suspect in the shooting involving his gun earlier this year. While that does not release the possibility of a negligent gun-ownership misdemeanor charge, this does clear the air about any prolonged suspension possibility. I still believe that Harrison will be a top 10 fantasy receiver this year and could provide a huge draft day value if current ADPs hold.
This next event was implied in a previous entry of this report, but it occurred on the day that my report posted in May and I forgot to mention it in June. RB Dominic Rhodes returned to his NFL home by signing a 1-year deal valued at $650K to back up starter RB Joseph Addai. Rhodes showed at the end of 2007 that he had plenty of gas left in the tank; after sitting most of the first 14 weeks, he started twice and ripped off a pair of 100+ yard games. Rhodes will be a solid flex player or #4 running back in most leagues, a possible starter in many larger leagues, and an absolute must handcuff to Addai. There is no way that his skills and his familiarity with the system and personnel will keep him any lower than #2 on the depth chart as he should easily surpass rookie RB Mike Hart. The signing also likely peals the death knell for the Colt career of RB Kenton Keith due to his dropped passes and off-field issues recently.
Other hot-off-the-press news involves the Colts' suddenly vaunted defense, although some of this news is not so good. Projected strong side starter LB Tyjuan Hagler tore a pectoral muscle in the conditioning workouts today and will start training camp on the PUP. There is no timetable for his rehab yet, but it is anticipated that he might be out for the start of the regular season at least. I presume that the likely plan will involve moving LB Clint Sessions into the starting lineup at either the "will" or "sam" slot; he is more comfortable on the weak side, and LB Freddie Keiaho's versatility may have him moving to the strongside to make room. Rookie LB Philip Wheeler is a possibility, but he needs to develop discipline and learn his role to be a starter right away.
In other defensive news, the team did lose out on signing veteran and Indy-native LB Roosevelt Colvin to the rival Texans this month, and with the Hagler injury that signing stings even more. Defensive stars DE Dwight Freeney and SS Bob Sanders are each also rehabbing right on schedule and the team doctors expect them each to start the camp on PUP and be 100% for the start of the regular season. The recovery of those two will completely dictate the level of success that this team has on defense since the entire scheme is predicated on them returning to their Pro Bowl levels of play.
Training camp starts on July 24 - an early start for the usually-late starting Colts. Part of that is due to the fact that they play in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3 against the Redskins, so they will have to play a game a week earlier than most teams. Three weeks after that, they open the new Lucas Oil Stadium with a preseason game against Buffalo... then on Sunday night in the primetime regular season opener as they host Chicago in a XLI rematch!
That is all for now - I will be back after the camp opens to fill you in on the happenings down at the Colts Corral, including updates on the rehabs of all the stars and starters. Until then, Colts' fans.....GO BLUE!!!
