The offseason has been very quiet for the Steelers. Quiet is good. The past two offseasons since the Super Bowl win have included the Ben Roethlisberger motorcycle accident, second head coaching change since 1970 and bitter contract dispute with Alan Faneca. Not the type of offseason events a team likes to have happen. The biggest Pittsburgh sporting news in the spring didn't involve the Steelers at all. Unusual in this rabid football town. The Penguins made a run to the Stanley Cup finals before coming up short to the Red Wings. That helped to keep the Steelers off the front of the local sports page. Even the Pirates are making a run at a .500 record for the first time in 15 years.
Minicamp and offseason organized team activities have basically gone off without a hitch. Everyone attended. The only minor stir was caused by first round pick Rashard Mendenhall suffering a pulled hamstring in minicamp and then being robbed at gunpoint in Chicago. He is fine. The main veteran headed for unrestricted free agency -- LT Marvel Smith -- has been quiet. He says that if a contract extension happens then it happens. If not then he will move on. A good attitude.
Only 30 days until training camp opens in Latrobe. Hopefully there is no more Steelers news until then.
There was a bit of sad news for long time fans of the Black and Gold. Former Steel Curtain stallwart and four time Super Bowl champion Dwight White died of complications from back surgery. He was only 58. White scored the franchise's first Super Bowl points when he tacked Fran Tarkenton for a safety in Super Bowl IX. I was 15 at the time and will never forget my excitement. Thanks for the memories Dwight and rest in peace.
