Here is an update on the World Champion NY Giants off season news for June:
QB – The new NFL roster maximum of 80 will be felt during next month’s training camp as Big Blue will not carry 5 quarterbacks. Anthony Wright looks most likely to go as young Andre Woodson may be signed to the practice squad leaving Eli, David Carr, and Jared Lorenzen as the main three.
RB – Ahmad Bradshaw is spending 30 days in a Virginia jail for a violation of probation of a juvenile offense. It is rumored the NFL will be investigating the circumstances to determine whether a suspension is warranted. Jacobs, Ward and Droughns round out the very deep backfield corps. Danny Ware showed some flashes in the recently concluded veterans minicamp.
WR – The big news here is Plax wanting his contract re-negotiated. He showed up at mini-camp but did not participate in drills, mostly due to his desire for a new contract. I have a feeling the team will work with him on this and get a deal done. He has great chemistry with Eli and has been mostly a stand up guy since he’s been with the team, particularly showing his toughness while playing on a bum ankle most of last season. The deep receiving corps is rounded out by Toomer, Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss, David Tyree and rookie Mario Manningham.
TE – Shockey continues being a distraction as he did not attend mini-camp workouts like other injured players. He had the nerve to get into a shouting match with Jerry Reese to boot. His welcome might have finally been worn out as I think the Giants will consider serious trade offers from this point forward. Boss will be the heir apparent if a Shockey deal is done.
OL – No issues here as all the starters are under contract and healthy for the most part.
DL – Future HOF’r Michael Strahan announced his retirement from the NFL last week. He did not want to leave the team in the lurch from a planning perspective and left the game healthy and with a nice Super Bowl ring for his efforts. Justin Tuck will step into his big shoes. Osi is looking for more money so it will be interesting to see what Jerry Reese does to make him whole. Veteran DT/DE Renaldo Wynn was signed for depth and should see reps, mostly at DT.
LB – There will be a lot of flux in this group as Pierce is the main holdover. Kiwanuka will stay at backer for now and rookies Goff and Kehl are getting plenty of looks too.
DB – No new news here but there will be heated battles here at training camp next month.
K – It’s the Tynes and Feagles show. No more roster room for other kickers in camp next month.
That’s it for now, more to come in July as we approach training camp.
