San Francisco 49ers

-- Marcus Lattimore Nearly Ready to Play --
Wed Oct 22, 2014 --from FFMastermind.com

NFL.com reports RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) is close to realizing a dream few thought was possible. The former South Carolina running back, who endured one of the most gruesome in-game injuries we've ever seen on a football field back in 2012, will hit the practice field as an active participant for the first time in his career once the San Francisco 49ers return from the bye week. "As you know, it's been a long road," Lattimore said, via CSN Bay Area. The fourth-round pick was sidelined for all of last season and for the first three months of the 2014 season. The team fully expected a lengthy rehab process when they chose him, but the Niners hoped he could come back and resemble the dynamic running back he was at South Carolina. Lattimore is down five pounds from his days as a Gamecock and says he feels quicker than ever. He'll remain at the team's facility in Santa Clara throughout the bye week to get ready for his debut

-- Aldon Smith Could Return to 49ers Sooner Than Expected --
Tue Oct 21, 2014 --from FFMastermind.com

ESPN reports the San Francisco 49ers could get help sooner than expected following this week's bye because outside LB Aldon Smith's nine-game suspension could be reduced for good behavior, league sources confirmed Monday. Smith was suspended before the season by the NFL under terms of the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policies. His nine-game suspension is set to end Nov. 10 after the 49ers play the Saints. However, sources confirmed an NBC Sports report that Smith's suspension could be reduced by one or two games, which makes it possible he could be available to play in a Week 9 game against the Rams or the Week 10 game against the Saints. He must maintain his good behavior for commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce the penalty. Under terms of his suspension, the league has allowed Smith to be in the team's facility for meetings and conditioning, although he has not been allowed to practice with the team.

He was scheduled to travel home on the team charter. “It was upper ankle,” 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh said. “Looks like it might be a break.”

-- 49ers Injury Update - Willis OUT This Week --
Wed Oct 15, 2014 --from FFMastermind.com

NBC Sports reports San Francisco 49ers LB Patrick Willis (toe) isn’t expected play this week, but the good news is the 49ers linebacker’s toe injury isn’t that serious. On his weekly radio show this morning, 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh said Willis shouldn’t miss an extended period of time. “It’s not turf toe, no, I wouldn’t say that,” Harbaugh said, via CSNBayArea.com. “But he’s continuing to be evaluated. I don’t think it’s a long-term thing, so that’s the positive. And that’s about as much update as has been given to me, so we’ll know more day-to-day.” Harbaugh also said that injuries to OG Mike Iupati, CB Jimmie Ward and WR Stevie Johnson won’t be long-term problems either. Iupati sustained a concussion, while Ward has a quad strain and Johnson was kneed in the hip while recovering an onside kick attempt.

CB Chris Cook (quadricep), DE Tony Jerod-Eddie (shoulder), P Andy Lee (right ankle), DE Ray McDonald (knee), DE Justin Smith (not injury related), and DT Ian Williams (ankle) are probable. Davis said he isn't sure whether he'll play Monday against the Rams as he continues to push through the pain of a back injury suffered Sept. 28 against the Eagles. “I don't feel like I'm where I need to be at the moment, but I'm getting there,” the 49ers tight end said Saturday before the team left for St. Louis. When the injury occurred, the pain was so sharp it stopped him in his tracks, Davis said. He was able to practice on a limited basis throughout this week, and he said he'd decide by Sunday whether he'll be able to play. He missed last week's game and is listed as questionable this week. “I'm definitely making progress,” he said. “Each and every day I'm getting better. That's what it's all about.”

Crabtree caught just one pass for 16 yards in the 49ers’ game Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. The previous week against the Philadelphia Eagles, he missed several plays due to a foot injury. He returned to the game wearing a different pair of shoes. He addressed his foot condition without even being asked. “I play (practice) every day,” Crabtree said. “Nothing is wrong with me.” Crabtree has 25 receptions in five games for 246 yards and two touchdowns. WR Anquan Boldin, the team’s other top receiver, has 25 catches for 303 yards.

-- Aldon Smith Likely to Play Before NaVorro Bowman --
Tue Oct 7, 2014 --from FFMastermind.com

CSNBayArea.com reports 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is eligible to return to the 49ers' practice field next week, but it appears to be a near-certainty that LB Aldon Smith will be beat him back into the lineup. Smith is serving a nine-game suspension for violations of the NFL’s policies on substance abuse and personal conduct. He is eligible to begin practicing on Nov. 10. He is on pace to make his season debut Nov. 16 at the New York Giants. And Smith expects to be able to step in immediately, according to 49ers DC Vic Fangio. “He told me last week, I asked him how’s he’s doing with his conditioning and fitness,, he says, ‘I’m the most fit guy in this building’ he told me,” Fangio said Tuesday morning on the "Murph and Mac Show" on KNBR. “He seems to be doing well along those lines. We’re looking forward to his return down the line.” Bowman continues to rehab the severe knee injury he sustained in the NFC Championship game. He is on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list and is not eligible for the first six weeks of the season. But Bowman will require several additional weeks to be ready to practice and get ready for game action, Fangio said. “NaVorro’s doing well in his rehab,” Fangio said. “He still has to be out two more games, at least, then he’ll be out several after that. But he’s doing well. He’s had no roadblocks in his rehab. Everything’s gone smooth. He’s ahead of where he should be and we’re looking forward to his return at some point. I think at some point he’ll eventually play (this season). But right now it’s still later than sooner. . . He’s going to need a couple weeks of practice to get his legs under him and feel comfortable playing on his leg.”

The 49ers have seen the errors of their ways, though, and even normally tight-lipped HC Jim Harbaugh has suggested Gore will go back to being his bell cow running back this week. After all, the Niners have to grind out the clock to keep Philadelphia's high-octane offense off the field. Gore should rebound from last week.

-- 49ers Use 5-WR Sets; Gore Very Upset --
Mon Sep 22, 2014 --from FFMastermind.com

The Sacramento Bee reports the 49ers rarely had used even three-receiver sets in the previous three seasons. But because of a lack of healthy tight ends, they used five wide receivers multiple times, including on five straight plays on their opening possession. The receiver-heavy look did not feature a running back, and the 49ers ran it without a huddle. It was successful. On their initial drive, the 49ers ran 12 plays, the last a 2-yard pass from QB Colin Kaepernick to WR Michael Crabtree to make the score 7-3. They mounted a 14-play drive on their second possession capped by RB Carlos Hyde’s stretch run to the left side for a 6-yard touchdown. Kaepernick’s 78.4 completion percentage (29 for 37) was his best as a starter. “We hadn’t shown that before,” Kaepernick said “It was something new. In the second half, we ran it here and there.” Does he wish the 49ers had been more consistent with the package? “I’d like to do anything that’s going to help us win,” he said. Not everyone seemed pleased with the approach. RB Frank Gore went to the sideline whenever the 49ers were in their five-receiver sets. He carried just once in the second half and finished with six rushes for 10 yards. Hyde had three carries for 13 yards. Gore was too upset to speak afterward. “I can’t talk right now,” he said after a minute of questions. “I’m sorry. I can’t talk.”

He’s only missed one game since 2007, and the 49ers’ lost that September meeting last year with the Indianapolis Colts while Davis was out with a hamstring strain. -- 49ers TE Injury Update - Vernon Davis May Play This Week --
Tue Sep 16, 2014 --from FFMastermind.com

CSNBayArea.com reports 49ers TE Vernon Davis (ankle) avoided a significant ankle injury and could be back on the field Sunday for the 49ers’ game against the Arizona Cardinals, a source said. Davis underwent an MRI examination on Monday that revealed a deep bruise and no structural damage to his left ankle, according to the source. Davis sustained the injury on a fourth-quarter play in which his foot got caught under Chicago Bears LB Jonathan Bostic at the end of Davis’ 8-yard reception. Davis did not return for the final 10 minutes of the game, and was seen on crutches in the 49ers’ locker room afterward. It is not known if Davis will participate in practices this week, as the 49ers prepare for a matchup against the NFC West’s only unbeaten team. The status of 49ers backup TE Vance McDonald (knee) is not known. McDonald sustained a right knee injury on RB Frank Gore’s second-quarter touchdown run that was nullified due to a penalty. McDonald was blocking DE Jared Allen when LB Shea McClellin rolled into the back of his leg after missing a tackle on Gore. McDonald returned briefly after the half but did not see any playing time in the fourth quarter. TE Derek Carrier is the only healthy tight end on the 49ers’ 53-man roster. He had the first three receptions of his NFL career for 41 yards in the 49ers’ 28-20 loss to the Bears.

The San Francisco 49ers linebacker recently began sprinting, an activity that Jim Harbaugh has kept a keen eye on at practice. “I must admit there’s times when I look out of my peripheral vision and see them doing their workouts on the turf over there,” Harbaugh said on Friday. “It looked like he was moving pretty good, so that’s very positive.” Bowman is on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List and will be sidelined at least for the first six games of the season.
