The 2010 NFL Draft: The 2010 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 22 through April 24, has evolved in a made-for-TV event. The first round will be held during primetime (beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET) on April 22 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The second and third rounds will be held on Friday, April 23 beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET. The 2010 NFL Draft will conclude on Saturday, April 24 with rounds 4-7 starting at 10:00 a.m. ET. The draft will continue to be televised by ESPN and the NFL Network. Last year, the NFL draft was viewed by a record 39 million people. Draft viewership increased 66 percent from 2001 to 2009 (from 23.5 million to 39 million). The first round of last year's draft drew a combined average of 6.3 million viewers, topping all basketball, hockey and baseball games that weekend (4/25/09-4/26/09). The NFL draft was a Saturday-Sunday event from 1995 to 2009. It took place on Sunday and Monday from 1988 to 1994, and prior to 1988, it was held on one or two weekdays. Under the new streamlined format begun last year, NFL teams have 10 minutes to make their pick in the first round, rather than 15, and seven minutes to make their pick in the second round rather than 10. For rounds 3-7, each selection will be allocated a five minute time limit.
2010 Rookie Draft Class Overview A Pre-Draft Look from a Fantasy Football Perspective: As the 2010 NFL Draft approaches, it’s becoming clear that the St. Louis Rams intend to address their need at quarterback by adding a rookie prospect. Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford is the Rams likely target with their No. 1 overall draft pick. Bradford is expected to struggle mightily given the Rams currently situations along the offensive line and at receiver. Rookie success in the NFL is the result of talent and opportunity (not draft status). Rookie prospects must be drafted into the "right" situations in order to succeed during the 2010 season. With teams addressing their needs through free agency, opportunities for rookies could be few and far between (barring injuries). At quarterback, questions remain about the durability of Bradford, Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen and Texas QB Colt McCoy. All three sustained significant injuries during the 2009 season. At running back, Clemson RB C.J. Spiller, Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews, California RB Jahvid Best, Stanford RB Toby Gerhart and Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty could become significant contributors in 2010. Mathews and Hardesty could emerge as featured backs if given the opportunity. Top wide receiver prospects such as Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant, Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas, Notre Dame WR Golden Tate, Illinois WR Arrelious Benn, and USC WR Damian Williams may not live up to their draft status immediately. All have various issues or limitations that could slow their development. The same goes for the top tight ends. Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham and Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski did not play a snap in 2009 due to injuries. Current and potential fantasy stars could benefit from rookie additions along the offensive line. Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung, Oklahoma OT Trent Williams, Iowa OT Bryan Bulaga, Maryland OT Bruce Campbell, Rutgers OT Anthony Davis, USC OT Charles Brown, Idaho OG Mike Iupati, and Florida C Maurkice Pouncey could all be selected in the first round. On defense, Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy are the top prospects. Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan, South Florida DE Jason Pierre-Paul, Texas OLB/DE Sergio Kindle, Michigan OLB/DE Brandon Graham, Tennessee FS/SS Eric Berry and Texas FS Earl Thomas are the top duos at their respective positions and will be first round picks. Alabama ILB Rolando McClain and Florida CB Joe Haden lead their respective positions and are first rounders as well.
