The 2009 NFL Draft: The 2009 NFL Draft, scheduled or April 25 and 26, will continue its streamlined format from last year. Only Rounds 1 and 2 will take place on the first day of the draft. The start time of the draft has changed again, with the first day beginning at 4:00 PM ET, which is an hour later than last year. The second day of the draft began at 10:00 AM ET last year. Under the new streamlined format, NFL teams have 10 minutes to make their pick in the first round, rather than 15, and seven minutes to make their pick in the second round rather than 10. On the second day, Rounds 3-7 will be held, with each selection allocated a five minute time limit.
2009 Rookie Draft Class Overview – A Pre-Draft Look from a Fantasy Football Perspective: With the 2009 NFL Draft nearing, there remains no clear cut No. 1 prospect. Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, Wake Forest OLB Aaron Curry, Baylor OT Jason Smith, and Virginia OT Eugene Monroe are all considered potential No. 1 overall draft picks. And if the Lions trade out of the No. 1 overall spot, Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree becomes another potential top selection. While who will be the No. 1 overall draft pick is drawing considerable attention, a bigger question remains… which prospects will be given the opportunity to succeed in the NFL? Rookie success in the NFL is the result of talent and opportunity (not draft status). Rookie prospects are going to have to be selected by the "right" teams in order to contribute significantly to their NFL teams (and their fantasy football teams) during the 2009 season. With teams addressing their needs through free agency, opportunities for rookies could be few and far between (barring injuries). At quarterback, questions remain about the abilities of Stafford, USC QB Mark Sanchez and Kansas State QB Josh Freeman to quickly take the reins of an NFL club and steer it toward success. At running back, Georgia RB Knowshon Moreno, Ohio State RB Chris "Beanie" Wells, Connecticut RB Donald Brown, Pittsburgh RB LeSean McCoy and Iowa RB Shonn Greene could be drafted into committee situations like several top running backs were last April. Top wide receiver prospects such as Texas Tech sophomore WR Michael Crabtree, Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin, Florida WR Percy Harvin, Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and North Carolina WR Hakeem Nicks may not live up to their draft status immediately. The 2008 wide receiver class was inconsistent, with only second round picks WR Eddie Royal (Broncos), WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles), and to some extent WR Donnie Avery (Rams) validating their draft status last season. Oklahoma State TE Brandon Pettigrew heads a very talented class of tights ends, most of whom are receivers first and blockers second. Along the offensive line, Baylor OT Jason Smith, Virginia OT Eugene Monroe, Mississippi OT Michael Oher, Alabama OT Andre Smith, Arizona OT Eben Britton and Connecticut OT William Beatty could be part of a class that rivals last year’s. California C Alex Mack and Oregon C Max Unger could be rare first round center selections. On defense, Curry and Boston College DT B.J. Raji lead the pack. Texas DE/OLB Brian Orakpo, Florida State DE/OLB Everette Brown, USC MLB Rey Maualuga, Ohio State MLB James Laurinaitis, Ohio State CB/FS Malcolm Jenkins, and Illinois CB Vontae Davis are the top duos at their respective positions and will be first round picks.
