Changes for the 2008 NFL Draft: The NFL Draft
will have a new look this year. The 2008 NFL Draft, scheduled
or April 26 and 27, has been streamlined, with less time between
picks in Rounds 1 and 2. The NFL Draft has also been restructured,
with only Rounds 1 and 2 taking place on the first day of the
draft. And the start time of the draft has changed, with the first
day beginning at 3:00 PM ET and the second day beginning at 10:00
AM. Under the new streamlined format, NFL teams will have 10 minutes
to make their pick in the first round, rather than 15, and seven
minutes to do so in the second round rather than 10. On the second
day, Rounds 3-7 will be held, with each selection allocated a
five minute time limit.
2008 Rookie Draft Class Overview – A Pre-Draft
Look from a Fantasy Football Perspective: With the 2008 NFL Draft
nearing, there remains no clear cut No. 1 prospect. Virginia
DE Chris Long, LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, Boston College QB Matt Ryan,
Michigan OT Jake Long, and Arkansas RB Darren
McFadden are all considered potential No. 1 overall draft
picks. Adding to the uncertainty is the fact that Dorsey and McFadden
are not considered the top prospects at their positions by some
NFL decision makers. But the bigger question remains… will
these prospects be given the opportunity to succeed in the NFL?
Rookie success in the NFL is the result of talent and opportunity
(not draft status). Rookie prospects are going to have to be selected
by the "right" teams in order to contribute significantly
to their NFL teams (and their fantasy football teams) during the
2008 season. But with teams addressing their needs through free
agency, opportunities for rookies could be few and far between
(barring injuries). At quarterback, questions remain about the
ability of Ryan and fellow first-round prospect Louisville
QB Brian Brohm to quickly take the reins of an NFL club
and steer it toward success. Delaware QB Joe Flacco,
a second round prospect, has the best arm strength of the class,
but could have further to go to be ready for NFL action. At the
running back and wide receiver, juniors will have a big impact
on the first round selections. Junior running backs Darren
McFadden (Arkansas), Rashard Mendenhall (Illinois), Jonathan Stewart
(Oregon), and Felix Jones (Arkansas) lead this year’s
class with Ray Rice (Rutgers) and Jamaal Charles (Texas)
not far behind. Juniors also dominate the top of the 2008 wide
receiver class. Michigan State WR Devin Thomas, Oklahoma
WR Malcolm Kelly, and California WR DeSean Jackson join
Texas senior WR Limas Sweed as first-round prospects.
Indiana junior WR James Hardy could sneak into
the first round as well. Juniors WR Mario Manningham (Michigan)
and WR Earl Bennett (Vanderbilt), along
with Texas A&M TE Martellus Bennett, are
second round prospects who are rising. Juniors draft entries have
also impacted the defensive side of the ball. Ohio State
DE/OLB Vernon Gholston, Florida DE Derrick Harvey, Clemson DE
Phillip Merling, Tennessee MLB/OLB Jerod Mayo, Kansas CB Aqib
Talib, and Miami (Florida) FS Kenny Phillips could all
be first round draft picks.
